Adilang Farmers Cooperative (AFC)

Adilang Farmers Cooperative (AFC)

Uniting farmers in Adilang to grow more, earn more, and build a stronger community together.

About the AFC

The Adilang Farmers Cooperative Society Limited (AFC) is a community-owned agricultural cooperative founded in July 2025 and officially registered with Uganda’s Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry in February 2026. Located in Anyami Cell, Alaa Ward, Adilang Town Council in Agago District, AFC brings together smallholder farmers across the greater Adilang area to farm collectively, access better markets, and improve their livelihoods.

Before AFC was formed, farmers in Adilang faced serious challenges: limited access to quality seeds and farm inputs, poor crop yields, lack of market access, and exploitation by middlemen who bought produce at low prices. Dongo Paco Foundation Ltd, in partnership with HAU, established AFC to address these challenges by bringing farmers together giving them the strength of numbers and the power of collective action.

AFC is fully member-owned. Farmers pay a membership fee and share capital, contribute land for collective production, and elect their own board of directors using a one-person-one-vote system. Together, they grow crops, purchase inputs in bulk, and sell produce collectively — removing the middlemen and increasing their bargaining power.

What We Do

Collective Farming

Members farm together on shared land, currently growing maize (Bazooka variety) in the 2026 first season.

Bulk Input Purchase

AFC buys seeds, tools, and agro-chemicals together, getting better prices than individual farmers could negotiate.

Farmer Training

Regular training sessions on modern farming practices, land management, budgeting, and garden preparation.

Market Access

Produce is stored and sold collectively, targeting markets in Gulu, Lira, and Jinja — removing exploitative middlemen.

Membership

Who can join and how the cooperative is governed

AFC currently has 120 members drawn from 12 parishes across greater Adilang. Any resident of Greater Adilang Subcounty who is 18 years or older, owns a minimum of 2 acres of land, and can meet the membership fee and share capital requirements is welcome to apply. AFC is led by an elected Board of Governors  with an Executive Committee that includes Sales & Marketing, Quality Assurance, Audit & Supervision, and Disciplinary committees.

Looking Ahead

AFC has ambitious plans ahead. The cooperative aims to grow its membership by 60 farmers each year — reaching 180 members in 2027 and 240 by 2028. Future investments include a modern grain storage facility with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes, a maize milling machine to serve Agago District (where no large-scale milling currently exists), and stronger market links with cities in Gulu, Lira, and Jinja.
